Drew Tal’s art elevates erotic art into the realm of magnificent spiritual composition

Drew Tal, New York fine art photographer, often uses his talent as a figurative art and portrait photographer to pose male models and female models to resemble sculptural compositions, especially in his collection of fine art photographs entitled On Edge.  These works can be viewed at the Emanuel Fremin Gallery show in New York and Miami.

Cement Dance is an artistic nude photograph of a male model posed in an acrobatic position, balancing on one hand upside down.  The male model is bronzed  in a patina- like fashion in this lightly sepia toned photograph.  He is placed in the center of a square cement box with an open top.  A billowy cloudy sky is visible at the top of the box giving this image a surreal quality, similar to a di Chirico.

Water Dance is a striking image of three artistic nudes bending backwards in a dramatic modern dance-like pose.  The center focal male model is in a full frontal view.  The other two male models are mirror images of one another in full body profiles on the left and right sides of the center male model.  The three male models are interacting in a trio to form a sculptural  composition.  Though the models would be considered provocative in any other circumstance, Water Dance is not erotic art. It is a figurative art expression of form and movement.  Tal uses his skills as a digital artist to partially and tastefully cover the three bodies with images of water as if  they were submerged in the ocean.  The three male models are placed in a background of bright light resembling the sun’s rays bursting through the ocean’s surface to create an underwater reflection of sunlight.  This gives the photograph a spiritual art quality as the three male models bend backward and upward into the light.  It is a skillful and artful marriage of digital art ability and fine art photography.

Tragedy is portrait photography of a male model and  female Asian model made to resemble marble or cement busts. Through his skillful use of digital art filters, as well as light and shadow in this black and white photo, Tal has given the portraits a sculptural quality.  This portrait photography also tells a story.  The title as well as the placement of the female model suggest that she has died, as the male model gazes tragically down on her. She gazes upward serenely and purposefully giving the image a spiritual art – like quality.  The portraits are placed against a cracked fresco-like wall suggesting antiquity. The cracks of the wall spread onto the surface of the male model and female model’s faces, unifying the composition and creating the sculptural, bust-like effect.
