Currently fewer Canadian children are being diagnosed with asthma, due to reduced number of smokers and consequently because of reduced exposure to second hand smoke, according to statistics.

In more than a decade rates of the chronic inflammatory disease dropped to substantially reduced levels among children aged two to seven.

“A variety of environmental factors, as for example reduced exposure to cigarette smoke contributed significantly to these statistics,” the study declares.

Canada’s national statistical agency (Statscan) showed that 9.8% of children aged two to seven were diagnosed with asthma in 2008-09, significantly lower than 13.2 % in 2000-01.
This drop occurred mainly because fewer Canadian children live in families where adults smoke, according to study.

About 6% of children aged 11 and under were regularly exposed to second hand smoke at their homes in 2008, if compared with 24% in 2000. As about teenagers 13% aged 15 and older smoked regularly in 2008, dropping from 19% in 2000.

In present a few parents smoke because there were no statistically proved differences in asthma rates between children in smoking and non-smoking families between 2006-07 and 2008-09.

“This data shows that adult smoking rates dropped significantly, thus parental smoking is not seen as the leading cause of asthma in young children,” declared the representative of Statscan.

This link between reduced smoking and fewer cases of asthma are not unique only for Canada. For example, after Scotland prohibited smoking in public places, serious cases of asthma fell among preschool and school-aged children.

For instance researches from western countries discovered that asthma rates among children rose steadily for several decades before decreasing.

Statscan declared that reduced disease rates might also be due to changes in the population structure, changes in diagnostic methods, decline in the predominance of respiratory allergies, advances in air quality and changes in hygiene practices.

As well as asthma, ear infections are related to exposure to second hand smoke.

Canadas national statistical agency found out that asthma predominance decreased in the Atlantic Provinces, Ontario and Quebec, but remained quite stable in the West. This survey also discovered that the number of children who had had an asthma attack in the past 12 months dropped to 36 % in 2008-09 from 53 % in 1994-95.

The give study is based on data presented by the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, a long-term study that capture information from thousands of families. The survey has been led every two years since 1994-95.

Comments Off on Questions To Ask At An Olathe, Ks Family Dentistry Facility

Family dentistry is a special type of dentistry that some dentists wish to specialize in. While the ADA or American Dental Association does not officially recognize family dentistry, many dentists will use this terminology in an effort to attract the attention of families who wish to use the same dentist for the entire family. Family dentists are often able to treat all members of the family from toddlers to senior citizens. If you are considering finding a dentist that specializes in Olathe, KS family dentistry, here are some questions you can ask them to ensure they are the right fit for your family.

The first question to ask the staff at an Olathe, KS family dentistry facility is the hours of operation. There are over 34 elementary schools, 9 middle schools and a handful of high schools that serve the Olathe, Kansas area. The last thing you want is to find a dentist that is only open during school hours as this will require you to take your child out of school. Asking about the hours of operation will allow you to find a dentist that is open during your family’s schedule, and will disrupt it as little as possible.

The second question to ask the staff at an Olathe, KS family dentistry facility is what they would do in the event that a specialist was needed. Many family dentists are only trained to handle basic oral care, such as fillings, root canals, and other procedures. In the event that a member of the family needs a specialized treatment the family dentist may need to recommend them to a specialist. Asking how this situation is handled before you choose a dentist can save you time and trouble in the future.

The third question to ask the staff at an Olathe, KS family dentistry facility is how they handle younger members of the family. Children are often difficult to treat when it comes to dental care because they are often restless or scared. Some dentists may claim they are family dentists but not have the experience or patience to deal with children. Asking ahead of time how much experience they have with children will not only save you time, but make your child’s experience with the dentist a stress-free one.

  • How Post-Secondary Health Education Courses Can Be Used to Enhance Job Readiness Skills

As the focus on wellness and preventative care becomes the norm in order to reduce healthcare costs, colleges and universities can also get involved by promoting health education courses that are already available on campus. Post-secondary institutions whose primary mission is to graduate students, who are workforce ready, should include a wellness component within the course of study. Many of the people investing in wellness education programs are employers seeking to reduce their own healthcare expenses for employees. Employers invest in wellness programs for their employees to boost morale and increase productivity. Workplace wellness programs not only help to increase productivity and ultimately affect a company’s revenue, but the programs also help to cut long-term healthcare costs for employers that provide healthcare benefits. One study indicated that for every $1.00 spent on wellness programs, healthcare costs are reduced by $3.37. In addition the cost of absenteeism is reduced by $2.73 for every $1.00 spent; with over 130 million individuals in the workforce, wellness programs can save employers a significant amount of money each year (Baicker et. al, 2010).

Many post-secondary institutions engage directly with business leaders and community organizations to create relevant programs based on the labor needs of the community. Health education courses can play an important role in helping to prepare students for the workforce because the classes can be used as a form of preventative care. Most health education courses are already offered on campus as part of the general curriculum requirements or as an elective option. Providing health education courses as part of a workforce readiness model can help employers save more money in addition to what they are already spending to create their own wellness programs. Offering a unique set of courses tailored to the needs of the employer that include a wellness component also provides post-secondary institutions with a unique selling point for job training programs.

Health education courses not only act as a form of preventative care, but the courses also help to promote critical thinking, health advocacy, communication skills, self-care, build self-esteem, promote self-awareness, goal setting, civic engagement, health literacy, self-efficacy, decision-making, and problem solving skills. The curriculum in health education courses provides students with diverse learning experiences on a variety of topics such as wellness as a lifestyle, stress management, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, relationship dynamics, communication skills, infection control, environmental health, and injury prevention. In addition, health education courses teach students about drug and alcohol abuse as well as prevention strategies. Currently drug and alcohol abuse costs employers $276 billion dollars a year in lost productivity (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2009). Health education courses can play a vital role in teaching students the necessary skills to function in the workplace and in everyday life.
